Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is injected into the area to be treated and is reserved for minor surgery that can be completed quickly. The patient is conscious but does not feel any pain. They may feel pressure from surgical instruments. Following the procedure, the area may remain numb for a few hours.
IV Sedation
For more involved oral surgery, Dr. Gibson administers IV sedation through an IV placed in the arm or hand. This is sometimes referred to as “twilight sleep” because the patient slips in and out of semi-consciousness. When the sedation wears off, patients usually do not remember anything about their procedure. It may take up to 24 hours for the lingering effects of IV sedation to wear off.
General Anesthesia
For major oral surgery, Dr. Gibson administers general anesthesia, which puts the patient into a deep sleep. Like IV sedation, general anesthesia is delivered through an intravenous needle in the arm but uses a different medication compound. The patient’s vital signs and breathing are closely monitored throughout the procedure. General anesthesia is reserved for lengthy or complex procedures such as dental implant placement and impacted wisdom teeth removal. Patients need someone to drive them home and care for them in the first 24 hours following general anesthesia use, as they will be groggy and unable to drive.
