Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) in Frisco
Dr. Stamboulieh uses platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in many surgical procedures, including dental implants and wisdom tooth extractions. PRF plays a crucial role in minimizing pain and swelling, but more importantly, it accelerates the healing process, giving you hope for a quicker recovery.
What is PRF?
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a blood product rich in blood cells that encourages blood clotting and the repair of blood vessels. When applied in dental-surgical situations, PRF promotes rapid healing and stimulates new tissue growth.
When PRF is placed at a wound site, it increases the body’s production of regenerative cells, aiding its natural ability to create new bone or soft tissues. The fibrin creates a sort of scaffold to support the new tissues and blood vessels. As healing begins, platelets in the PRF stimulate stem cell production, protect the surgical site against infection, and encourage blood clotting.

Obtaining and Using PRF
Platelet-rich fibrin is not only effective but also completely safe and bio-compatible because it is derived from your own blood. On the day of your oral surgery, we draw a small sample of your blood and then put it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins it until the various components separate. Fibrin and platelets coagulate in the center, which we remove and drain of excess fluid to create PRF. When your surgery is complete, the PRF is placed over the area ensuring a safe and secure healing process.
While PRF is generally safe and beneficial, it’s important to note that there may be some risks or side effects associated with its use. These could include minor bruising or discomfort at the site where the blood was drawn. However, these are usually mild and temporary.
PRF Frequently Asked Questions
Is PRF safe?
Yes, PRF is indeed safe. It is derived from your blood, which is placed in a sterile centrifuge to spin into separate components, including platelet-rich fibrin. Because it comes from your own body, there is no risk of being exposed to a blood-borne disease, providing you with a high level of safety.
How much blood do you need for PRF?
On the day of your procedure, we will draw between three and six tubes of blood, or 30 to 60 mL. This simple process takes less than a minute.
Is PRF recommended for anyone undergoing oral surgery?
No. Although it benefits most patients, there are some situations when it is not recommended. Patients with hematologic diseases or bleeding disorders should not use PRF. Dr. Stamboulieh will determine whether PRF is appropriate for you at your initial consultation.
Can you get PRF from donor blood?
No. To ensure the platelet-rich fibrin works with your body’s immune system and is not rejected, we derive it from your own blood. This also protects you against any blood-borne pathogens.
Will my insurance pay for PRF?
While most insurance providers do not cover PRF, it is always advisable to confirm this with your insurance carrier. They can provide you with specific information about your coverage.
